ABOUT US

We started with one shelf of magazines nobody else wanted.

THE FOUNDER

CALL NUMBER
本 · 00-001

本 started as a personal collection, not a company. Our founder spent years tracking down Japanese magazines from the early '90s through the mid-2000s: street fashion monthlies, subculture zines, design quarterlies, the kind of print media that shaped a decade of youth culture and then quietly went out of print.

The more of it we read, the stranger the timing felt. Ideas about identity, self-presentation, and community that these magazines were working through in 1996 are the same ones circulating on timelines today. They're just stripped of their context, their authorship, and usually their nuance. We got tired of watching that material get rediscovered as aesthetic, disconnected from where it came from, while the actual pages sat in storage bins or sold for more than most people could justify.

本 (hon, Japanese for "book") is our answer: put the real material back into circulation, in a system built to protect it rather than monetize it, and let people encounter it the way it was actually meant to be read: cover to cover, at their own pace, without anything deciding what comes next for them.

OUR MISSION

To keep genuine print media in circulation for people who never got the chance to encounter it the first time.

WHAT WE WON'T DO

No algorithmic feed

Nothing is ranked, boosted, or served to you based on behavior. You search the catalog like a catalog.

No paywall on reading

Every title is free to check out. Donations fund preservation, never gate content.

No open sign-up

Growth happens through people who already care about the material, not ad spend.
